Res Futura’s organization is based fundamentally on labour. All those who work to contribute to Res Futura and its community are qualified to become Members, and those whose contribution is consistent are qualified to become Executives. The judgment on whether a contribution counts, which we call “passing,” is done by existing Members and Executives of Res Futura, following the below procedures.
Members of Res Futura have the right to form work groups in Res Futura’s name, and to request financial and logistical resources from Res Futura. Members are expected to contribute to Res Futura, to maintain reasonable conduct at official Res Futura events, and to participate in the process of passing new Members.
Executives of Res Futura form its steering committee. All of Res Futura’s executive and budgetary decisions, including appointment to its public offices, are made by consensus between Executives. Executives are expected to maintain a consistent contribution to Res Futura, to attend official meetings, and to participate in the process of passing new Executives.
For more information, email the Members Officer at members@resfutura.ca.
How to become a Member of Res Futura
1. At any official event of Res Futura, anyone may declare that they wish to be passed as a Member of Res Futura. An official event is one which has been advertised to Res Futura’s general events mailing list, including all current Members as well as non-Members who have signed up. Currently, Q&A is the only regular official event.
2. Once this declaration has been made, all current Members of Res Futura who are able to participate in the passing process will be asked to raise their hands. If there are at least three, the passing may continue. If not, the procedure ends here, and the proposed Member must attempt to pass at another official event.
3. One of the volunteering Members (the “leader”) will be designated by consensus to lead the remainder of the procedure.
4. Using a list randomizer, the leader will enter in the names of all of the volunteering Members, and then randomize it. The top three names of the randomized list will designate the panel of Jurors, who will decide upon the proposed Member’s passing. Anyone may ask the leader to present the list publicly for inspection.
5. The proposed Member will testify to the Jurors that they have made a recent and significant contribution to Res Futura.
6. The Jurors may question the proposed Member for further information about their contribution.
7. Based on their deliberation on the value of the proposed Member’s contribution, the Jurors will declare whether they believe the proposed Member should be passed as a Member. If the Jurors are unanimously in favour, the proposed Member is passed as a Member. Otherwise, the pass fails.
8. The leader will notify Res Futura’s Members Officer (members@resfutura.ca) of the date of the attempt, the names of the proposed Member and Jurors, and whether the pass succeeded. If the pass failed, the proposed Member is not permitted to attempt to be passed again as a Member for a period of 90 days. If the pass succeeded, the proposed Member is designated as a Member of Res Futura for a period of one year.
9. Members may voluntarily declare that they wish to renew their Membership prior to its expiry. They must be passed in the same procedure just described at an official event of Res Futura.
